AZAWAD IS NOT A POLITICAL INVENTION – AZAWAD IS THE TRUE NAME OF A VAST REGION DATING BACK TO PRE-COLONIAL TIMES
By Akal Vision:
Some claim that “Azawad” is a recent political invention dating back to the 1990s, and that the region of Timbuktu, Gao, Kidal, and Taoudeni never bore that name before.
This is a false and deliberately reductive interpretation of history.
The truth is simple:
The term Azawad is much older than the modern states of West Africa.
It belongs to the Tamasheq (Tuareg Berber) language and historically refers to a vast region of pastures, plains, and transhumance extending far beyond current administrative boundaries.
Azawad existed long before 1990, even before French colonization, and there are hundreds of pre-colonial and colonial maps and old books, all written in english, arabic and french which proves that Azawad existed before the time of colonization. It is also firmly rooted in the collective memory of the nomadic peoples (Tuaregs, Arabs (Moors) etc who have inhabited the Sahara and the Sahel for centuries.
These peoples have always called their vast land by its true name: Azawad.
Furthermore, those who wish to deny the historical existence of Azawad overlook a crucial fact:
“Mali” itself was not the name of a geographical location before 1960.
“Mali” did not designate a city, a village, or a specific region of the Sahel. It was chosen politically to recall the ancient Mali Empire, centered much further southwest (in present-day Guinea and southern Mali), and not in the regions of Timbuktu, Gao, Kidal, or Taoudeni.
Furthermore, “Mali” is a Mandingo word related to the animal hippopotamus, and no traditional village in the Sahel or northern Mali naturally bears this name.
In summary:
Azawad is an ancient geographical, cultural, and historical reality.
Mali is a modern political choice from 1960, with no direct connection to any location in the North or the Sahel.
The people of Azawad didn’t wait until the 1990s to name their lands. To deny the existence of Azawad is to deny the millennia-old history of the Saharan nomads, their culture, their language, and their memory.
Azawagh or Azawad, this word designates a space or a grazing land, or simply a planet. (Moors, Arabs, Berbers)
Mali, the word is a name for hippos, or it means the land of hippopotamuses.
Note from Azawad Support Group: Have you ever heard of hippopotamuses living in the desert?
#FreeAzawad
To Turkey: STOP selling drones to Mali who uses the Africa Corps to kill civilians, especially women, elderly and children in Azawad (occupied by Mali) Let for once humanity go before interests!
UPDATE 09-08-25: Here is a video posted by Ag Attarikhe on X: The message is clear – Without the Azawadians, there will be no lasting peace in Mali. This is a reality that no one can ignore. The Azawadian people, in their struggle for dignity and recognition of their rights, hold within them the key to reconciliation and stability in the Sahel.
Azawad does exist indeed!
