The Mauritanian government has threatened any Malian and Azawadian refugee who violates the country’s laws with having their refugee status revoked and being expelled to their country of origin.
The violation includes raising the Azawad flag (of the Azawad revolutionaries) in the IDP camps but no pressure was issued on the Malian side not to raise their flag and therefore it´s a case of discrimination.
The ban on raising the Azawad flag is said to be due to the clashes between the two groups of refugees, those who support the Malian government and those who support the Azawad revolutionaries in the struggle for freedom and independence.
