Report on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s Statements on the Conflict between Azawad and the Malian Government
Introduction: In a press conference held with African Union representatives, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the ongoing conflict between Azawad and the Malian government has complex historical, cultural, and geographical dimensions. This statement focused on a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the region and reflected official recognition of the impact of colonial decisions on the current situation.
Content of the Statements: Lavrov emphasized that Mali’s current borders, which shaped the country as it is today, are the product of colonial decisions that failed to take into account the cultural, social, and religious characteristics of the peoples comprising the region. He explained that these borders were drawn up without consultation or consent from local communities, leading to an ongoing conflict that has yet to be properly diagnosed. In this context, Lavrov believed that solutions proposed for this conflict must be more just and more appropriate to the cultural, social, and political realities of the region.
Emphasizing the historical dimension of the conflict: Lavrov’s statements undoubtedly place the conflict between Azawad and the Malian government in its historical context. The conflict is not merely a recent issue; it is an extension of the colonial era, when borders were drawn arbitrarily without regard for the social and cultural diversity of the region’s peoples. The borders imposed during that era also led to the formation of states comprising a variety of ethnicities and languages, casting a shadow over the stability of these states over the decades.
Reactions from the Azawad Liberation Front: In this context, Mohamed Mouloud Ramdane, spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), stated that Lavrov’s statements represent an important step towards recognizing the Azawad reality. He emphasized that recognizing the conflict as part of a long and complex history helps raise international awareness of the need to resolve this conflict in a way that recognizes the cultural and social specificities of the Azawad people.
Political and geographical implications: These statements open the way to highlighting the issue of the political independence of the Azawad people. By emphasizing that the conflict stems from colonial divisions, it raises important questions about the validity of current borders, which are considered a relic of the colonial past. The statement also highlights the importance of considering more comprehensive solutions based on the will of the people to determine their own destiny, which could lead to significant political changes in the region.
Conclusion: Sergey Lavrov’s statements come at a sensitive time and represent a step toward shedding light on the situation in Azawad and the Malian government from a historical and political perspective. These statements constitute a call to reconsider colonial decisions that continue to impact the daily reality in the region, reinforcing the importance of seeking just and comprehensive solutions that ensure respect for the privacy of the peoples concerned.

Reading into a significant historical event:
Anyone who thinks that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s speech today in Moscow before the coup puppets in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso was merely a speech for media consumption is either ill-informed about the history of Russian diplomacy or completely unaware of how Moscow skillfully blends hard politics with soft power.
In his speech, Lavrov indirectly but thoughtfully acknowledged the essence of the historical dispute between the Azawad region and Mali in particular, thus opening a new phase in an old-new conflict that regional and international powers, first and foremost Algeria, have long tried to obscure.
Russia is now well aware that it has become embroiled in the shifting sands of Azawad and that, thanks to the “advice” of its advisor, Algeria, it has embarked on an ill-advised adventure by deploying the Wagner Group in the Sahel, with the aim of crushing the Azawad revolution. However, the calculations changed as soon as the UAE, Morocco’s ally, entered the equation, prompting Algeria to quickly withdraw from behind the scenes and enter into a sham confrontation with the Russian-backed coup plotters.
This is where the problems between the Sahel coup plotters and Tebboune’s generals began, after Algeria sensed that the UAE was seeking a smooth political solution to the Azawad problem in exchange for a clear economic partnership in the region’s resources. Lavrov’s speech today may not be merely a diplomatic stance; it may represent the beginning of the unannounced end of the alliance between the Sahel coup plotters and Russia. We must not forget that the Azawadis have everything Russia needs, and Russia will not achieve what it wants except through them!

Excerpt from the speech by Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing with representatives of the AES.
We tell Mr. Sergei Lavrov that the conflict between Azawad and the central authorities in Bamako perfectly illustrates the issue he raised; we are pleased that this reality is finally being recognized.
Mali’s current borders are the result of a colonial decision which, without taking into account the multiple specificities of our people, the colonizer attached them to this state without consultation or consent.
As we have always maintained, this conflict, rooted in a long and complex history, has essential political and geographical dimensions. Yet, it has never been the subject of a genuine diagnosis that would allow for just and appropriate solutions.

This is indeed not merely a speech for media consumption as Mr Akli Sh*kka wrote. We *hope* that it might be good news in the darkness and terror that the people of Azawad have been forced to live in under the Malian governement since the 1960s. It´s time that the Azawadian people get their situation recognized. Time will tell.
