Bamako – July 2, 2025
Upon his return from Moscow, the president of the Malian transition met with General Alhaji Ag Gamou and his political mentor, Alhamdou Ag Ilyène. This meeting, held behind closed doors, reportedly focused on strengthening internal alliances amid the security turmoil in the Kidal region.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the president publicly thanked the general for his loyalty to the Malian state, and even more so for his silence in the face of the abuses perpetrated by the FAMa and their allies in the Wagner group, particularly in the Kidal, Tessit, and Tin-Essako districts. Testimonies from the field speak of extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, and collective reprisals, particularly targeting the Imghad population, from which the general hails.
In a gesture both symbolic and controversial, an envelope of 600 million CFA francs was reportedly handed over to the general, ostensibly to help the victims’ families. However, many observers believe this is more of an attempt at political compensation to stifle criticism and cover up the massacres committed in the region.
General Ag Gamou, an influential military figure in the north, has long been accused of exploiting the Imghad community in the service of the Malian state, to the detriment of its community interests and its relations with other Tuareg communities. Under his command, the Imghad never obtained an administrative region or a circle of their own, despite their involvement in all of the regime’s military campaigns.
Even more seriously, voices are now being raised within the Tuareg community to denounce the general’s role in the deterioration of relations between the Imghad and their neighbors in Gourma and Adagh. “He sacrificed Tuareg unity on the altar of loyalty to Mali,” accuses a young civil society activist in Kidal.
For many northerners, the future of the Imghad cannot be built on submission to a state that does not protect them, but on unity and solidarity within Azawad, where their historical rights and identity can finally be recognized.
While General Ag Gamou is now calling for a “general mobilization” of the Imghad, some see it as a last-ditch effort to preserve their eroding influence and divert attention from shared responsibility for the ever-escalating violence.
On 25/06/2025, a FAMa patrol and Russians from Africa Corps went to the Ounder well located in the Eghachar Sadidane valley, 18 km north of Kidal, where they carried out the summary execution of 7 civilians, including an 8-year-old child.
