It wasn’t just a date… it was a promise and a pain all at once. A declaration of dignity and a collective cry that rejected historical injustice.
When the **Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA)** declared independence, they weren’t just raising a new flag; they were rewriting a history written for decades in the blood and dreams of the Azawadis. They were telling the world: **This is our land, and we will not be subservient to anyone.**
But the world didn’t listen.
*France* — which boasts of freedom — was the first to stab the Azawadi dream in the back. They came with the “fight against terrorism” kit, but the truth was clear: they weren’t afraid of “terrorism,” but rather of a people who refused to be a number in the equation of their old colonialism. From Operation Serval until today, the war has not stopped, and the enemy has not changed: it is the dream of a free Azawad.
As for the **international silence**, it is not an absence of voices, but rather complicity in the language of money and weapons. They have turned our struggle into a “terrorism file,” as they always do with anyone who rejects injustice. But they will not erase the memory.
**The memory of the sands does not die.**
It still preserves the breath of the martyrs, records the first declaration of independence, and preserves the roar of the revolutionaries: **”Azawad is not a bargain… Azawad is a right that cannot be forgotten.”**
Today, they may not recognize us.
But tomorrow will not be built with their forged papers, but with our will. We will teach our children that dignity is not given, but taken away. And that the sands—even if covered in blood—will remain a witness that **”Azawad will not die.”**

Azawad Independence Day Commemoration – April 6, 2012
In this historic photo, Commander Bilal Ag Acharif appears alongside Azawad rebels on the eve of the declaration of Azawad’s independence in 2012. It was a moment the Azawad had been waiting for decades, as they declared their sovereignty, affirmed their identity, and made sacrifices for freedom.
Salute to all those who never wavered, to those who carried the cause in their hearts and made history. Glory and immortality to the martyrs, and freedom for Azawad!
