ATROCITIES COMMITTED BY THE MALIAN ARMY AND THE WAGNER MERCENARIES

ATROCITIES COMMITTED BY THE MALIAN ARMY AND THE WAGNER MERCENARIES:

Since the arrival of the Wagner Group mercenaries and their military support for the Malian armed forces, the people of Azawad have faced an escalation of indescribable violence. Targeted massacres, massive destruction of vital infrastructure, and indiscriminate attacks occur daily in this territory.

Airstrikes carried out by military drones systematically target civilian areas, devastating entire communities indiscriminately. These attacks, often combined with aerial bombardments, make life even more unbearable for the people of Azawad.

Military ground patrols only exacerbate the situation. Every day, sweeps are carried out, targeting innocent civilians, whether in their camps or in markets. These operations result in summary executions, arbitrary arrests, theft of property, and in some cases, sexual violence.

A tragic example of this violence recently took place in the village of Chamio, located in the commune of Banikane, in the Tagaroust circle, on the south bank of the Niger River (Arabanda). During an airstrike carried out by the Malian army, at least 12 people were killed and several others injured. A truck carrying goods was set on fire. The victims were members of the Songhai ethnic group, who were loading goods into their vehicle at the time of the bombing.

Accounts from survivors and witnesses reveal the brutality and cruelty of these attacks, which appear to deliberately focus on civilians, thus exacerbating the suffering of an entire population.

These atrocities are a reflection of an unjust and inhumane war, in which human life is sacrificed without consideration. The international community’s silence in the face of these tragic events raises many questions and exacerbates the victims’ pain.

Azawad, its inhabitants, and their rights to security, peace, and dignity must be recognized and protected against this systematic violence.
