In a remarkable development that highlights the complexity of the security landscape in the Sahel region, Burkina Faso continues to strengthen its military coordination with the coup regime in Mali, directing its efforts against the Azawad Liberation Front. This clearly ignores the importance of political dialogue and addressing the roots of the historical conflict in northern Mali’s Azawad region.
This coordination, based on a unilateral vision of security, has come at the expense of the real fronts.
Burkinabe forces were subjected to a violent attack by jihadist groups, on may 14, resulting in a number of deaths and the militants seizing control of a large area in the north of the country.
This blow reflects the extent of the security deterioration and the erosion of the state’s ability to protect its territory, amidst the distraction of efforts toward issues that do not pose the greatest threat.
Meanwhile, the Malian regime continues to launch intensive military operations against the Azawad regions, ignoring international and regional calls to revive the political process. The result: internal disintegration, the steady growth of extremist groups’ influence, and a dangerous decline in regional stability.
Engaging in a side conflict with the Azawad issue, instead of confronting the escalating terrorist threat, only serves the agenda of violence, deepens the crisis in the Sahel, and makes the alliance between Ouagadougou and Bamako a riskier option than a bet on security.
Beware of being drawn into the narrow agendas of the coup regime in Mali. President Goïta is not seeking to build strategic alliances as much as he is trying to export his internal crises and redirect the conflict away from his administration’s failure to confront jihadist threats.
Your priority must be your people, the stability of your countries, and confronting the real danger posed by the armed groups that are ravaging the country’s peripheries and threatening its national fabric.
Engaging in a war that does not concern you, against an Azawad faction with its own political history and cause, will only deplete your armies, undermine your internal cohesion, and weaken your regional position.
History is unforgiving to those who sacrifice the interests of their people for the sake of the adventures of others.
