LETTER OF PROTEST FROM KAL-AKAL ASSOCIATION
About the report of Human Rights Watch published on May 20, 2025
The association Kal-Akal has taken note of the report made public this May 20, 2025 by Human Rights Watch, denouncing serious violations of human rights in central and southern Mali, including the summary execution of 22 men.
We salute the documentation effort of Human Rights Watch, whose work contributes essentially to the fight against impunity. However, we express our deep concern over the absence of any mention of the numerous atrocities committed in the regions of Azawad (North Mali).
Since the resumption of hostilities between the State of Mali in August 2023 and the signatories of the Algiers Accord, the Azawad population has suffered serious acts: arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial executions, forced movement and other forms of violence. These violations are regularly reported by witnesses, survivors and field actors. Their absence in major international reports constitutes an additional injustice.
We respectfully call on Human Rights Watch to expand its investigations throughout the Malian territory, including the Northern regions, to ensure fair and comprehensive coverage of human rights violations.
Justice for being real cannot be selective. All citizens regardless of origin or location, deserve the same consideration, compassion, and protection.
We reaffirm our full readiness to convey documented information on violations committed in Azawad, and to contribute seriously and rigorously to any work aimed at shedding light on the suffering endured by our communities.
