Press Release and Urgent Official Report

Date: August 8, 2025

Subject: Discovery of a Mass Grave in the Azawad Region, Mali

Introduction:

On Friday, August 8, 2025, the discovery of a mass grave was announced in a region of the Azawad Region, northern Mali, following heavy rains that exposed parts of buried bodies.

Local sources in the Azawad Region received reliable eyewitness accounts of the discovery of sites in the areas of N’Fif and Kidal containing a large number of civilian bodies. The bodies were found piled up and dumped in the sand, in varying states of decomposition. It is likely that the deaths occurred earlier, perhaps in 2023 or 2024, or since the entry of armed forces into the area.

Incident Details:

According to local sources and field testimonies, the area where the grave was found had witnessed the presence of armed forces in recent months, described as belonging to an alliance composed of members of the notoriously brutal Malian army and foreign fighters, including Russian mercenaries. Local sources accuse this alliance of committing serious violations against civilians, including extrajudicial executions.

Testimonies indicate that the burials were random and unorganized, and that the sites are located in exposed desert areas. These facts raise serious concerns about the possibility of serious human rights violations.

Field Situation:

Location of Discovery: The N’Fif and Kidal regions of Azawad region.

Number of Bodies: The exact number of victims had not been verified at the time of writing, but eyewitnesses indicated a large number of victims.

Circumstances of Discovery: Heavy rains eroded the soil and exposed parts of the bodies.

Condition of the bodies: Varying degrees of decomposition, indicating that the deaths occurred at different times, some likely as recently as 2023 or 2024.

Reactions:

Activists and human rights organizations have called for an independent international investigation to identify those responsible for the killings and bring them to justice.

The Malian authorities or any official body has not yet issued a statement clarifying their position on the incident.

Urgent Appeal:

We call on international human rights organizations and independent humanitarian agencies to take urgent action to verify this information, protect the sites, and document evidence to ensure accountability for those responsible and preserve the dignity of the victims.

Conclusion:

This incident comes amid escalating security tensions and military operations in northern Mali, amid increasing reports of serious human rights violations. This incident underscores the urgent need for international oversight and to ensure accountability for all parties involved in these violations.
