SABOTAGE OF WATERHOLES IN AZAWAD

This time it was in Inadjabar, Tessalit Circle (Kidal Region), in Azawad. The Russian forces and their FAMAS auxiliaries, damaged 4 water supply systems and also took their solar system and generators.

In the desert, water is life, lack of it, death. The Tuaregs have a saying – “Aman Iman” – water is life. The Tuareg band Tinariwen once made an album with that title.

These waterholes, built by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), that were sabotaged and destroyed were the only water sources within a very large area. You can imagine how important they are in the heat of the desert where the temperature often reaches 40-50 degrees Celsius or even more. This will plunge entire communities into a life-threatening situation. And of course, entire families will be forced into exiles and thousands of animals will die of thirst.

Which is exactly what the Malian governement wants as it seems? or why else would they let the Africa Corps and the Malian army sabotage the water holes built by NGOs, not the authorities of Bamako (and with international support) to help the local civilian population survive in an environment completely neglected by Mali. Azawad was handed over to Mali by colonial France in the 60s (against the will of the people) but Mali has ever since then neglected Azawad.

They simply want to force the population to leave, in one way or another, and sabotaging water holes is one. Whoever representatives of the state that could do something to remedy this situation but remains silent are complicit.
