Since early October 2023, many people have been killed in Azawad and dozens have disappeared, according to reports from activists, media professionals, and local news agencies. According to a review of Azawad media reports and the Azawadi army’s media cell Cicama Azawad, dozens of Arabs, white and brown Tuaregs, and Azawadians of the Songhai ethnic group have been killed in several areas. These areas are mostly Bedouin villages and camps located near the Timbuktu province, and others in the areas between Gao and And Kidal.
According to activists, the goal of the crimes of the Malian army and its partner Wagner is a project they call “sterilizing the desert.” Which means killing those who remain in their place, and terrorizing the population to push them to migrate out of their areas, in addition to the systematic slaughter of milk-producing animals, the poisoning of wells and the seizure of food grains.
The Malian army intends to regain control of the northern regions and the entire Azawad desert, driven by its commitment alongside the Russian Wagner militia, by handing over all the mining sites in these areas after Bamako signed protection contracts with the Russian militia, which provide for the payment of sums amounting to millions of dollars per month, in addition to the lion’s share of the country’s gold mines.
