The reality for every Azawadian in the so-called “Mali state”, where discrimination and racism are built into the structure of this artificial entity is that no matter how much an Azawadi tries to integrate, he remains an outsider, a stranger, a non-belonger. Just a name, skin color or dialect is enough to make you a target.
To be born in a land and then told that you are not from it, despite the fact that your ancestors lived there long before the state of Mali was even created, to be treated as a second-class citizen because you are not Mandinka or Bambara, to be denied rights just because you are an Azawadi – these are the dirty politics that fuel hatred and expose the falsity of the patriotism they pay lip service to.
But they are delusional if they think that exclusion will make the Azawadis forget who they are. On the contrary, every look of superiority, every insult, every injustice, makes the Azawadi believe that he is not from Mali and never will be.
Mali is not a homeland, but a prison for the Azawadis, planted by France and nurtured by corrupt regimes. Those who refuse to recognize the reality of Azawad today will understand it when the free people are in charge tomorrow.
The map shows the Azawad region with its historical borders, which include the regions of Kidal, Timbuktu, Gao, and Taoudenni, lands claimed by the Imaguen (Tuaregs) and their allies as part of their struggle for self-determination and independence. This map represents a historical and geographical reality that contradicts the official propaganda that attempts to marginalize the Azawad cause and hide its independent identity. For those who are not familiar with Azawad, this is a land that has resisted and continues to resist Malian occupation and foreign domination.
