THE UN`s SILENCE ON THE AZAWAD TRAGEDY: WHEN HUMANITY IGNORES VICTIMES AND MOBILIZES FOR WEAPONS
The worst trial an overlook people can face is not merely geographical cruelty or scarce resources, but “methodical international silence” that silently legitimizes injustice.
When we contemplate the tragic reality lived by the people of Azawad, one of the most glaring paradoxes in the history of the contemporary international system unfolds before us: Why does the United Nations stand by in silence regarding the massacres, ethnic cleansing, and grave violations suffered by unarmed Azawadi civilians, yet its halls erupt and a succession of expressions of concern emerge to defend armed factions whose very mission is combat?
First: Azawad… Civilian Blood That Fails to Stir “International Concern”
Over the decades, the population of Azawad has endured systematic campaigns of repression and massacres documented by living testimony, only to be met with a strange and deliberate international indifference.
Victims Without an Echo: When children and women are killed, fields are burned, and villages are displaced on ethnic or identity grounds, UN investigative aircraft do not land in the region, nor are emergency sessions of the Security Council convened to condemn the atrocities.
Double Standards: The blood of Azawadi civilians seems stripped of the political weight required to merit a “statement of condemnation” or a “fact-finding commission.” It is as if, on the international scale, humanity is fractured according to geopolitical interests rather than the sheer horror of the crime.
Secondly: The paradox of protecting armed men at the expense of innocent victims.
The most painful aspect of this situation lies in the blatant contradiction of international reactions:
Mobilization for Arms: When fighters or armed groups (whose core functions are combat and conflict) face pressure or targeted field operations, UN and international bodies rush to express the utmost degrees of alarm, setting international diplomatic mechanisms in motion to protect them or negotiate their survival.
Hiding Behind Bureaucracy: Meanwhile, unarmed Azawadi civilians are left to face their fate alone against the machinery of violence, while international diplomacy sometimes transforms into a shield protecting parties to armed conflict under the pretext of “state stability” or “counter-terrorism” – ignoring the fundamental truth that the primary and ultimate victim is the innocent human being whose only possessions are a right to life and dignity.
Third: The Final Humanitarian Appeal – Justice Unshackled from Politics
True security and lasting stability in the Sahel region will never be achieved through policies of double standards, nor by ignoring the historical wounds of marginalized peoples.
