Well before Mali’s independence in 1960, the name Azawad was already used to designate a clearly identified geographical, cultural, and human space in historical accounts, local traditions, and several ancient administrative documents.

The Malian state, as it exists today, stems from a French colonial legacy that brought together several different peoples, territories, and historical realities within a single administrative entity. Yet, over the decades, the authorities in Bamako have progressively attempted to erase or marginalize the name “Azawad,” despite its deep historical roots in the collective memory of the local populations.

The removal of the term Azawad is not perceived by many as a simple administrative or political choice. It is seen as an attempt at acculturation and identity erasure, aimed at denying the historical, cultural, and political existence of the indigenous peoples of this region. By gradually replacing this name in official speeches, maps, institutions, and national narratives, Bamako has sought to impose a centralized interpretation of history at the expense of local realities.

However, a people without memory is a people easier to dominate. Erasing a historical name often weakens the collective identity it represents. The word Azawad does not simply represent a territory; it embodies a history, traditions, a culture, ways of life, and a memory passed down from generation to generation.

Even today, despite attempts at political and symbolic erasure, the name Azawad continues to exist in the minds, in popular narratives, and in the identity claims of the populations concerned. This demonstrates that no administrative decision can completely erase a historical reality deeply rooted in the memory of the people.

Attached is a supplementary court ruling constituting further material evidence attesting to the existence and official use of the name Azawad in historical administrative documents.

By the editorial staff of Méhari Post.

Mohamed Ag Abdalah — Sociologist, specialist in the historical and socio-political issues of Azawad.

19-05-26

H O M E

This is one of the many irrefutable historical proofs demonstrating that Azawad existed long before the creation of the modern Malian state, inherited from the colonial partitioning.
