There are hundereds of <a href=\"https:\/\/freeazawad.com\/en_gb\/lets-take-a-look-at-old-pre-colonial-colonial-maps-of-azawad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colonial and pre-colonial maps<\/a> with the name Azawad\/Asaouad written on them.<\/em> As well as &#8220;Tuareg&#8221; and different Tuareg confederations names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">CHAPTER ONE: THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME &#8211; FROM &#8220;FRENCH SUDAN&#8221; TO MODERN &#8220;MALI&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1. The Entity Created by Colonialism: \u201cFrench Sudan\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Historians agree that the entity that later became \u201cMali\u201d did not bear this name. It was officially known under French occupation as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">\u201cFrench Sudan\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Among the most prominent authors who documented this are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Robin Hallett \u2013 Africa Since 1875.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">John Ralph Willis \u2013 The French in West Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Th\u00e9odore Monod \u2013 M\u00e9haristes du Niger.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">All of them confirmed that the political borders of the region were entirely artificial, drawn by France to serve its military and administrative interests, and not to reflect any historical or cultural unity of the peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2. The Name \u201cMali\u201d: A Modern Political Designation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The name \u201cMali\u201d emerged in 1960 after the collapse of the Mali Federation between Senegal and French Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Historians have documented this, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Boubacar Barry* in his book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Senegambia and the Atlantic Slave Trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">They affirmed that the name \u201cMali\u201d was a symbolic political attempt to reclaim the legacy of the historical Mali Empire, even though:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">The current borders do not belong to the historical boundaries of the empire, do not extend north into the Sahara, and do not encompass the peoples and cultures of Azawad.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>3. Azawad: The Original Historical Name Before All Modern Designations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The name \u201cAzawad\u201d is older chronologically and more geographically established than the name \u201cmodern Mali.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>It is mentioned in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Heinrich Barth&#8217;s writings \u2013 Travels and Discoveries in North and Central Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Charles de Foucauld&#8217;s Dictionary of Touareg-French Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>These sources confirm that &#8220;Azawad&#8221; was:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">The name of the desert region north of the Niger River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">An independent geographical and cultural area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A homeland for the Tuareg, Arabs, and Sahrawis throughout history.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"is-style-wide wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">CHAPTERT TWO: THE HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXT &#8211; THE FORCED INCORPORATION OF AZAWAD INTO THE MODERN STATE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1. The French Occupation Period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When the French occupation expanded at the end of the 19th century:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">There was no entity called &#8220;Mali.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Azawad was not under southern rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The region was self-governed according to Tuareg and Arab traditions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The French researcher Monod documented that Azawad was an open resistance zone against French forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>2. The Post-Independence Period.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">After the independence of \u201cFrench Sudan\u201d under the name \u201cMali,\u201d the inhabitants of Azawad <em>were not consulted <\/em>on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Joining the state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The form of government<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Or the nature of the political relationship<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Instead, the central government in Bamako imposed its control by force.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>3. Central Policies and Southern Domination.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>The Malian state adopted policies of:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Comprehensive economic marginalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Militarization of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Prevention of political participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Suppression of cultural identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Forcible imposition of education and language.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>This was accompanied by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Extensive and documented military campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Especially in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Gao<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Timbuktu<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Kidal<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These campaigns targeted civilians and resulted in massacres, displacement, and serious human rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"is-style-wide wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">CHAPTER THREE: CRIMES AND VIOLATIONS &#8211; DOCUMENTATION AND INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY<strong>*<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Documented by:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">International Human Rights Organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">United Nations Reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Field Testimonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Crimes include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Extrajudicial killings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Forced displacement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Mass arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Torture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Targeting of women and children<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Burning of villages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Collective punishment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Concealment of bodies<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These crimes\u2014according to international law\u2014constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"is-style-wide wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">CHAPTER FOUR: INTERNATIONAL LEGAL FRAMEWORK . THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE OF AZAWAD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-mono-2-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b7712816a61e72524c997138cc2d51c2\"><strong>The Right to Self-Determination.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Enshrined in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Article 1 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is an inalienable right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">2. The Prohibition of the Subjugation of Peoples by Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">*United Nations Resolution 2625 of 1970*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This applies to the case of Azawad, a region annexed by force without a referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">3. Colonial Borders Are Not Absolutely Sacred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">According to the rulings of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">International Court of Justice \u2014 Western Sahara Case 1975<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">South Sudan Case<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">East Timor Case<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">All of these affirmed that borders drawn by colonialism **cannot prevent peoples from exercising their inherent right if they were annexed against their will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"is-style-wide wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">CHAPTER FIVE: COMPREHENSIVE HUMANITARIAN AND POLITICAL STATEMENT ON AZAWAD. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>The Azawad question is a question of:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">* People<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">* Identity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">* History<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">* Legal Right<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">* Human Existence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">It is not a separatist movement, as the Malian regime attempts to portray it, but rather the result of a **historical error committed by the colonial administration** and perpetuated by the post-independence state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>We affirm that:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">The integration of Azawad into Mali was **illegal**.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Bamako&#8217;s continued control by force constitutes a **violation of international law**.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">All crimes committed are documented and constitute **international criminal responsibility**.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">AZAWAD PEOPLE:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The people of Azawad possess the natural and legal right to self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">We call upon the international community to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">1. Recognize the historical rights of the people of Azawad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">2. Launch an independent international investigation into the massacres and violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">3. Reassess the legal status of the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">4. Support international protection mechanisms for the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">5.
